As cameras and camcorders become synonymous, the shift in DSLR to adapt a more "video" friendly approach comes out with each revision (either in Canon, or Nikon or Panasonic).
"Lighting" as a whole can achieve many different looks that are otherwise unobtainable through traditional/natural lighting techniques.
In our experience, most clients rent and/or produce for three topics 1) Interviews 2) Promo Videos 3) Music Videos. All three require different lighting techniques and in our next blog, we'll be exploring each topic in medium-depth.
But for now, all three of these styles have one thing in common... and that is "Dynamic Range". Which is essentially the range of light allowed into the image without underexposing or overexposing the image... in short, a nice and 'balanced' image. For most projects, that's the end -goal... and it will create the most satisfying experience for viewing and post-production.
Until then, here's a decent video from Bart Johnson Productions - explaining a little more about Dynamic Range.

Yes, the lighting really plays an important role in photo or video production. For me, as a creative director once, I believe that lighting shows the mood you are showing to others. The mood of what you are showing is the dependent of the thing you are producing. We can make use of the natural lighting, which is more applicable for lively products or services we are rendering. There are lots of techniques to consider in order to gain a lot of viewers and builds curiosity that leads to sales.

Lighting is equally important to framing because the amount of light can already give the emphasis a balanced framing can give. It can even provide good framing to something that was not given that detail. Everything can be repaired by proper lighting. It can be used to define a moment. It can draw the emotions and make the viewer read between the lines amid the sarcasm of each script which sometimes only a few of us can understand. We need to give credit to lighting directors for the most beautiful videos ever produced.
