Using the QSC K10.2 on Stage

1/20/2020

Since the K10.2 debuted, we have been fans of this powered speaker from day one. Originally thought of as a utilitarian speaker for premium sound indoors, we had started to utilize this speaker and a variety of other applications.
QSC k10.2 are a great utilitarian speaker for live sound applications and events all around
Before we go any further, it's super important to note that proper EQ and compression on the mixing console side is essential. Dictating from the console side your sound in live applications, truly allows you to get the most out of these awesome speakers.
Another reason why we dig the K10.2 over the K8.2 and K12.2 series truly comes down to size versus function. There has not yet been an application the speaker hasn't been able to handle.

Granted, most professional riders are going to be asking for a minimum of 12in drivers for their wedges; but sadly most professional riders aren't going to request speakers made by QSC (which we rant about in another blog).

The biggest plus in outdoor live sound applications is the ability to delay your signal path right at the speaker level. Granted some engineers would prefer to have delay and timing control at the mix position, but for most Civic and medium-sized public events (between 10,000 to 15,000 people) the quick and dirty approach is perfect.
Also note the size of the total attendance. We have used the K10.2 in fairground settings as a playback and paging system combined with excellent results. Ideally, doubling the cabs with at least 10 feet of height will ensure there's plenty of sound pressure.
On stage, we have used a set of k10s partnered with proper concert subs - as an excellent FOH for smaller events of roughly 300 people. Adding one more cab per side increases your ability to handle about 500 people.
For live sound and outdoor events, often times we're recommending the QSC K10.2
The QSC K10.2 can be used as a monitor wedge, just not for drummers and bassists.
As monitor wedges, the k10s have worked well for pop bands, folk bands and even psychobilly bands! Even though it has worked in the past, the only position we would not recommend the k10.2 is as a drummers wedge or bass guitarist wedge.
In a pinch, if you have extra active subs and/or some other means of getting that overactive "punch" which musicians really need to hear on stage... Then go for it.
From a premium sound standpoint, QSC gets a lot of negative press from PRO sound community. We understand that. But next to the RCF hd12s (which we will be working with this season), we have not been able to find a floor standing cab between the $600 and $700 dollar price range which delivers as much power and value as the QSC K10.2.
Indoor use of a pair of QSC K10.2 active speakers are no problem for up to 300 people
With that being said, if you are seriously considering the K10.2 as your next purchase (assuming you already have the capability to properly control the tone and dynamics of your sound, mix wise)... You are going to be extremely happy with the versatility of your purchase.
Don't take our word for it though, schedule a rental of a QSC sound system package today!
